good - bad web sites

The McMillan & Company Professional Organizing’s website is very SUCK! From this lesson’s readings, I’ve learned that the four basic principles of designing a good web page are: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. This web page, http://www.organizer4me.com/index.html, has none of these principles. There are too many colors used on this site that competing with the focal point is. The colors used are not effective but distracting. The logo/header does not display consistently on every page; a page may show up for a search that people may not know the name of the company. The texts, in various sizes, run wide across the page make it hard to read. The information presented is overwhelming. Too much information under one tab/button what required a long scrolling down the page. The navigation buttons on top and on the left side disappear when moving to certain page; which causes one to scroll all the way up or down the page to find a button to take back to top/home. Links and buttons are not highlighted which causes users having to constantly check “Am I on the page where I’ve selected a button?  Is this a link or underline?” Also, the information is not grouping with the like which makes it hard to navigate and to find the information. Clearly, this website does not live up to the company’s mission and motto: "If you can't find something in 30 seconds, it's in the wrong place and it needs a 'home'!"

googleGood Web Design: www.google.com
Google web site is considered good web design because it’s simple and clean with clear primary purpose: search engine. There is no instruction needed to navigate the site. People just know what to do. The color/logo is replicated throughout to have the same feel.  The top options/buttons are easily navigated placed and the information is divided in chunk for easier search. I love Google and can’t live without it! This web page helps remind me that it’s okay to leave white/blank space.
